More about the release

A shimmer of the self is reflected in a moment of captured attention. Everything is a Self Portrait is a 300-page exploration of the unending self, a collection of photography and poetry created and designed by Francis Kanai, based in Takasaki, Japan, and Malaya Malandro, based in Los Angeles, USA. The book is born from a sui generis process of collaboration which investigates the worlds birthed through the collisions of individual mediums, time frames, and physical locale. Intended to be viewed either sequentially, or in the brief random in-betweens, subtle differences in meaning will reveal themselves at each visit. Images and poetry were chosen for their overlapping of meaning and repetition of subject, forwarding a sense of the familiar unfamiliar; an expanding tangling of experience, a déjà vu. Everything is a Self Portrait’s accumulated density is an exploration of the relationship between self and other as a sanctification of the cherished banal.
